Yekaterinburg police arrested two residents of the city of 19 and 23 years, who were charged with vandalism. Young people stole a monument to the first president of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin, installed in a park near the Yeltsin Center, and tried to drown the sculpture in the Olkhovka River. The crime was solved thanks to the fact that the monument surfaced almost immediately after the drowning attempt, and the fingerprints of the criminals were left on it.
The fact that a bronze monument to the first president was floating around Olkhovka was reported to the police by a 55-year-old resident of the village of Zaveta Ilyich Yegor G. Arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers found a monument drifting with the speed of about 1.5 km / h. Within two hours, Yeltsin’s statue was taken out of the water and sent for examination, where the criminologists were able to detect the fingerprints of alleged vandals. The suspects were detained two days later at the airport of Yekaterinburg while trying to escape to Cuba.
“Thanks to the coordinated work of the operatives, the act of vandalism was revealed. The search for the monument lasted a week and we gradually accepted the idea that Boris Nikolayevich would no longer smile at us with his bronze face, when suddenly the statue was found in a suburb of Yekaterinburg. Now the monument stands in its place, and a police officer with a machine gun is on duty around the clock, ”said Colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Anatoly Kvashnin.
The defendants explain the reasons for their act with hatred of Yeltsin because of the collapse of the USSR. They face prison sentences ranging from 3 to 4.5 years.
